The challenge

The client ran payroll for its customers on an old FoxPro desktop program. It worked, but it lived on one machine, had no web access for staff or employees, and its tax logic was locked inside the old code. The new system had to produce the same numbers, handle several companies and pay cycles, and create the reports that go to banks and Tax Administration Jamaica.

What we built

We built a web application on Next.js, PostgreSQL and Prisma with Firebase sign-in. Each company has its own isolated pay cycles, and four roles (super admin, admin, payroll officer, read-only) control who can see and change what. PAYE, NIS, NHT, Education Tax and pension are calculated from date-versioned rates. To match the old system, we read the legacy program's tax routines and rebuilt its cumulative tax logic, including P45 continuation for employees who join mid-year, where over-withheld tax comes back as a refund through payroll. The pay register produces its outputs as Excel and PDF, employees get a self-service area, and an AI helpdesk answers payroll questions and flags unusual changes.
