How to Publish Fiction and Serial Stories Online with Ghost

Serial fiction platforms own your readers. Your own site can feel like a well-made book instead, with chapters, reader settings and paid later chapters.

Serial fiction is having a long moment. Readers follow novels released chapter by chapter, poets build audiences one poem at a time, and short story writers run newsletters with thousands of readers. Most of that happens on platforms that own the reader relationship, take a share of earnings and decide what gets seen.

Your own site can do better for readers and for you. With Ghost, you get a website, a newsletter that delivers each chapter by email, and paid memberships with no revenue cut. With the right theme, the site can feel like a well-made book rather than a blog. This guide shows how, using our theme Verse.

Why publish fiction on your own site

  • You own the readers. Every subscriber is on your email list, not a platform's.
  • You set the price. Free, paid, or free with paid early access. Ghost takes no percentage.
  • You control the reading experience. No ads beside your chapters, no algorithm between you and your readers.
  • Your work lasts. Your archive is on your domain, in your format, exportable at any time.

The trade-off is discovery: platforms bring readers to you. Many writers do both, posting early chapters on a platform and continuing on their own site.

What a fiction site needs

Books, not posts

Readers think in books and chapters. The site should group chapters into books, with a cover, a contents page and a clear "Start" or "Continue" button.

Chapter navigation

"Chapter 3 of 8", previous and next chapter, and the full contents one tap away.

Comfortable, adjustable reading

Long reading on screens is tiring. Readers should choose text size, background (including a dark "night" page) and typeface.

Remembering where readers stopped

Serial readers come back days later. The site should take them back to the exact place.

Poetry that keeps its shape

Line breaks are the poem. A theme that reflows them destroys the work.

How Verse handles it

Verse is a quiet, book-like Ghost theme for fiction, serials and poetry.

Books from tags. Create a tag with the book's name and a slug that starts with book-, for example book-salt-road, and upload an upright cover (2:3, at least 800 × 1200 pixels). With no image, Verse draws a cover in the tag's colour. Add the book tag as the first tag on each chapter; chapters follow publish date, oldest first.

Chapter pages. "Chapter 3 of 8", previous and next chapter, and the full contents. A book page shows the cover, a numbered contents list and a Start or Continue button.

A bookshelf. On the homepage and the library page, with each reader's progress ("3 of 8 read").

Reader settings. The Aa button opens five text sizes, three pages (paper, white, night) and serif or sans text. The choice is remembered and applied before the page appears, so there is no flash.

Focus mode. Press F to hide everything but the story; Escape to come back.

Continue where you stopped. Verse remembers how far each reader got, in their own browser with nothing sent anywhere. A bar offers to take them back, the homepage shows a Continue reading box, and a small note shows the minutes left while reading.

Book details. A drop cap and small capitals at the start of each story, and ⁂ for scene breaks.

Poems. Choose the Poem template, write each stanza as a paragraph and press Shift + Enter at the end of each line. Verse keeps every line break, sets the poem in a narrow column and leaves out the drop cap.

More. Light paper by default with a night page and reader toggle; Library and Authors page templates; membership page with tiers and a monthly/yearly switch; styled paywall for paid chapters; sign-in, sign-up and account pages; self-hosted Cormorant and Literata fonts; full translation support; 18 theme settings; no jQuery.

Pricing a serial on Ghost

  • Free serial, paid extras. Every chapter free; members get bonus stories, early chapters or the complete book download.
  • Free start, paid finish. First chapters free, the rest for paid members. Clear and effective.
  • Paid early access. Each chapter goes to paid members first and becomes free a few weeks later.

Ghost sells tiers, not individual books, so frame the offer as a membership: "Read every chapter as it is written." Our guide to Ghost memberships with Stripe covers setup.

Publishing tips for serial writers

  1. Build a buffer. Have several chapters written before chapter one goes live.
  2. Publish on a fixed day. Readers form habits around a schedule.
  3. Send every chapter by email. Ghost's newsletter delivers it; many readers will read in their inbox.
  4. End chapters with a reason to come back. Old advice, still true.
  5. Use the book description to hook new readers on the book page.
  6. Change dates to reorder. Chapters follow publish date, so adjust a date to move a chapter.

What Verse does not do

  • No ebook export. Readers read on the site or by email. Offer an ebook file to members separately if you have one.
  • No cross-device bookmarks. Reading progress lives in the browser.
  • Not for news or technical writing. See Gazette or Stack.

Other themes to consider

Building readers before you charge

Serial fiction grows slowly at first. A pattern that works for many writers:

  1. Publish the opening free. The first few chapters are your sample. Make them easy to find and easy to share.
  2. Keep a strict schedule. Readers of serials return for the next chapter; missing a week loses some of them. Write a buffer of several chapters before you start.
  3. Collect emails from chapter one. Ghost's free membership lets readers get each new chapter by email.
  4. Introduce paid access once readers are hooked, for example early access to new chapters, a complete archive or bonus stories.
  5. Finish what you start. Readers are wary of serials that stop halfway. Completing a book builds trust for the next one.

Formatting for comfortable reading

  • Keep chapters a consistent length, so readers know what to expect.
  • Use scene breaks rather than very long unbroken sections.
  • Avoid images inside chapters unless they matter to the story, since they interrupt reading.
  • Proofread on a phone, where most serials are read.

Rights and publishing later

Publishing a story on your own site is still publishing. If you hope to sell the book to a publisher later, be aware that some prefer unpublished work. Others are happy to publish a serial that has built an audience. Self-published writers often release a serial on their site first, then collect it as an ebook or print book. Keeping the serial on a site you own makes any of these paths easier.

Community

Reply to reader comments and messages. Serial readers often become your most loyal supporters, and their feedback improves the story.

Bottom line

Your fiction deserves a home that feels like a book: books and chapters, reader settings, focus mode, "continue where you stopped" and poems that keep their line breaks, with your readers and income under your control. Verse does that on Ghost for $59.
