When someone in Kingston, Montego Bay or Mandeville needs a plumber, a hairdresser, a pharmacy or a lunch spot, they search on their phone. The businesses that show up first, with hours, photos, reviews and a call button, get the call. Many Jamaican businesses lose those customers simply because they have not done a few free steps.
This guide covers those steps in order. None of them cost money. Do them before you spend on ads or a new website.
Step 1: Claim your Google Business Profile
Your Business Profile is the box that appears on Google Search and Maps with your name, map pin, hours, phone number, photos and reviews. It is free.
- Search for your business name on Google Maps. If it already appears (customers sometimes add businesses), claim it. If not, add it.
- Choose the most accurate primary category ("Appliance repair service", not just "Service"). You can add secondary categories.
- Verify the business as Google asks. Until it is verified, your edits may not show.
Step 2: Get the details exactly right
Customers and Google both rely on consistent information.
- Name: your real business name, as on your sign. Do not stuff it with keywords.
- Address and map pin: place the pin precisely. Many Jamaican addresses are hard to find; add landmarks in your description ("opposite the Texaco, second floor").
- Service area: if you go to customers (plumbers, cleaners, mobile mechanics), set the areas you serve and hide the address if you do not receive customers.
- Phone number: one that is answered. If customers prefer WhatsApp, say so in the description and on your website.
- Hours: including special hours on holidays like Independence Day and Christmas.
- Website: your site's address, if you have one.
Use exactly the same name, address and phone number on your website, Facebook, Instagram and any directories.
Step 3: Add real photos
Profiles with photos look alive. Add:
- your storefront or entrance, so people recognise it;
- inside the shop or workspace;
- your team at work (with permission);
- your products or finished jobs;
- your logo and a cover photo.
Phone photos are fine. Bright, sharp and honest beats professional and fake.
Step 4: Write a useful description and list your services
Say what you do, where, for whom, and what makes you different, in plain words. List your main services or products with short descriptions and, if you are comfortable, starting prices.
Step 5: Ask for reviews, and reply to all of them
Reviews influence both customers and how prominently you appear.
- Ask at the right moment: when the job is done and the customer is pleased.
- Make it easy: share your review link by WhatsApp or print a QR code at the counter.
- Reply to every review, thanking good ones and responding calmly and helpfully to bad ones. Future customers read the replies.
- Never buy reviews or write fake ones. It breaks Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.
Step 6: Post updates
Business Profiles support posts: offers, events, new products, holiday hours. A post every week or two shows the business is active.
Step 7: Have a simple website
You can appear on Google without a website, but a site helps in three ways: it gives Google more to understand about your business, it lets you answer questions the profile cannot, and many customers check the website before calling.
A small business site does not need to be expensive. Ours is a fixed US$300 simple business website: up to five pages, a contact form, WhatsApp and click-to-call buttons, your Google Maps location and basic search setup including Google Search Console. Read what a $300 website includes and website costs in Jamaica.
Step 8: Connect Google Search Console
Search Console is free and shows which searches bring people to your website, which pages Google has found, and whether there are problems. It is included in our website setup; you can also add it yourself.
Step 9: Be consistent everywhere
Check your Facebook page, Instagram bio, WhatsApp Business profile and any directory listings. Same name, same address, same number, same hours. Fix old listings with wrong numbers.
Step 10: Check monthly
Once a month:
- read and reply to new reviews;
- check hours and holiday hours;
- add a few new photos;
- look at your profile's insights to see how people find you and what they do (call, request directions, visit the website).
What about Google Ads?
Ads can bring customers quickly, but they work much better once your profile, reviews and website are in good shape, because people check them before calling. If you do advertise, send clicks to a page built for the offer; see why paid ads need a landing page.
Common mistakes we see
Most businesses that struggle to appear on Google are making one of a handful of fixable mistakes:
- Two or more profiles for the same business. Duplicates split reviews and confuse Google. If you find a duplicate, request that it be merged or removed rather than ignoring it.
- A keyword-stuffed business name. Naming the profile "Best Plumber Kingston Cheap Plumbing" breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended. Use your real business name.
- An address that does not match the sign on the building. If customers come to you, the address on Google, the website and the sign should be the same.
- A phone number nobody answers. Calls from Google are often from people ready to buy. If you cannot answer, make WhatsApp or a callback the clear alternative.
- Wrong opening hours on public holidays. Update special hours before holidays so customers do not arrive at a locked door.
- Ignoring questions. People can ask questions on your profile. Answer them, because others will read the answers.
- Buying reviews. Fake reviews can lead to removed reviews or a suspended profile, and customers can often tell.
If you serve customers at their location
Many Jamaican businesses do not have a shopfront: mobile mechanics, cleaners, caterers, technicians, tutors who travel. Google allows this. Set the profile up as a service-area business, hide your home address, and list the parishes or towns you serve. You still need to verify the business, and the same rules about real photos and reviews apply. Photos of your work at customers' locations (with their permission) are especially useful here.
A one-hour starter plan
If you only have one hour this week, do this:
- 15 minutes: search for your business on Google Maps and claim or create the profile.
- 15 minutes: fill in the category, hours, phone, WhatsApp link and website.
- 15 minutes: upload ten real photos: outside, inside, your team and your work.
- 15 minutes: send a short message to five recent happy customers asking for a review, with the direct review link.
Then put a reminder in your calendar to check the profile once a month.
Patience pays
Results from a Google Business Profile build over weeks, not days. Keep the details right, add photos and ask for reviews steadily.
Bottom line
Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, get your details exactly right, add real photos, list your services, ask for reviews and reply to them, post updates, and back it up with a simple website that has the same details. All of it is free or cheap, and it is how local customers in Jamaica find you.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free. It lets your business appear on Google Maps and in local search results with your hours, phone number, photos and reviews.
No, a Business Profile can appear on its own. But a simple website gives Google and customers more information, and many people check the website before they call.
Ask happy customers directly, at the moment they are happy, and make it easy with a short link or QR code. Reply to every review, good or bad. Never buy reviews or post fake ones.
Place the map pin exactly, add clear directions and landmarks in your description and photos of the entrance. If you serve customers at their location instead, set a service area and hide your address.
